Had dinner with family at Crustacean Grill by Fosters (267 Holland Avenue, Singapore) last Saturday. This restaurant has a very hip decor, with tanks of fish surrounding the walls and water features you can walk on. There's also live music to accompany your meal. I had a seafood bisque and a crab cake salad. The seafood bisque is rich and came loaded with crab claws and squid. The crab cake salad is also quite good, and has more crab meat than the usual Maryland crab cakes which contains more flour than crab meat! My only complain is that the crab cake is very salty. It would be good if they do with much less salt. Overall, a rather enjoyable dinner.
Had dinner with XQ at Keyaki (Pan-Pacific Hotel, Singapore) last Sunday. The restaurant is designed as a 17th century Japanese farmhouse. You had to walk through a nice Japanese garden with koi ponds to get to the dining area. We had sukiyaki, california handroll, and grilled cod. All of which turned out to be quite good. The restaurant is not very big, so it can get crowded sometimes. Reservation is recommended.
Had business lunch at Moonfish Pasta & Seafood Restaurant (No. 9 Raffles Boulevard, #01-106 Millenia Walk, Singapore) last week. I wasn't feeling hungry, so I had a small Caesar salad and some bruschetta. The Caesar salad is quite good, but the bruschetta had too little tomatoes. I would rate the food here as average at the most.
Had lunch with SH and SS at Teochew Garden Restaurant (298 Beach Rd, #B1-03/08 The Concourse, Singapore) last Friday. This is a simple restaurant serving descent Teochew food. We had braised goose and some dim sum, all of which rather good. Service is also quite prompt. But don't expect opulence. I still prefer Liang Kee for Teochew food.
Had dinner with XQ at Nagae Japanese Restaurant (#01-02 Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, 392 Havelock Road, Singapore) last night. The food is below average. We had a salmon and shiromi (white fish) sashimi, California handroll, and grilled cod with salt, all of which turned out to be disappointments. The sashimi is fishy. The California handroll is full of rice with little crab and avocado! The grilled cod is flavourless, and seemed more panfried than grilled. Service is without a smile, with all the waitresses looking rather bored and without enthusiasm. I would recommend giving this place a miss.
Had dinner with XQ at Kuriya Dining (1 Kim Seng Promenade, #02-42 Great World City, Singapore 237994) last week. The food is generally good and rather avant garde. We had sashimi, california handroll, and a semi-grilled tuna, all of them prepared well. The ambience is also quite good, with a modern and sleek setting.
Had dinner with XQ at Haru Dining & Sake Bar (#01-07 One Fullerton, 1 Fullerton road, Singapore 049213) two weekends ago. Haru is a sleek Japanese restaurant serving Americanized Japanese food. We had swordfish sashimi, spider (softshell crab sushi), California handroll, and teriyaki salmon. The food is average but the ambience is good. We had a table by the sea and was able to enjoy the view of boats going pass, with the Esplanade as backdrop.
